Maybe it should be called The Summer I Turned Petty.
Shamelessly obsessed with the show so I had to go back to the source material! Really well written and atmospheric, can’t wait to read the next two.
I would have really loved this as a teen! The plot and writing was a bit too simple to hold my whole attention.
alright, let’s get down to brass tacks, I don’t like when people rate books low without understanding the intended audience. TSITP gets a lot of hate surrounding the main character “Belly” being boy obsessed. Just a reminder that this a youth romance novel! It is not supposed to be a detailed adult romance story (speaking only on the first book here).
I read this book for the first time in middle school and I enjoyed it a lot! I appreciate the innocence of Belly dealing with her emotions while going through puberty. There is a sense of nostalgia for this novel, remembering your first real crush.
While there are some questionable themes that directly battle traditional feminist values - we are talking about a 16 year old female MC. If anything it goes to show how young women are raised/what they are taught to value (male attention, gaining worth/value through appearance). However, this isn’t Jenny Han crafting an anti feminist story some of it is just reality of being a young girl.
Jenny Han will always be one of my favorite romance youth writers - and dang did she nail the book to tv series adaptations in both TSITP and To all the boys I’ve loved before.

this book wasn’t THAT bad tbh. it was entertaining and all but i just couldn’t rly connect with any of the characters. i didn’t like either of the love interests either … jeremiah was kinda boring and conrad was just a jerk for no reason. also the way belly talked abt and treated other girls was so weird??? 😭
