The story is moderately interesting, and kept me reading to the end of the book, but there are more than a few plot holes. The writing is a bit heavy-handed (and the author is a little overly fond of cult sci-fi and fantasy references (e.g., Star Trek, Star Wars, even Harry Potter)). I found the military part of the book unconvincing (though I've never been in a military myself, I have read other military science fiction that was much more convincing - both in things like the command structure and how the organization worked, as well as individual comportment and discipline). Certain events in the book I knew were going to happen from the beginning - maybe not exactly *how*, but that they would happen (e.g., a conversation in the first couple of chapters is direct foreshadowing of something that happens in the last couple of chapters). I haven't encountered the particular method of FTL travel presented in this book before, so points for some creativity.

I kind of want to read the next book to see where the story goes, and how the conflict between the aliens and the humans is resolved, but not enough to buy the next book. If I happen upon it at a library or it's offered as a freebie, I might, but not otherwise.

Read only if you want an old-fashioned pulp war novel.

Basically this plot says "The aliens are just militaristic big guys on campus with big ships and a mission to obliterate other species who figure out warp travel. The little guys (us) engage in shoot outs using conventional weapons. Heroes emerge. Love interests are present for effect."

Pulp science fiction. I give it 2 stars instead of 1 because at least it was well executed enough that I finished the book instead of quitting. But I'm not gonna read the sequels.
