The next book in Alexa Martin’s Mustangs series is even better than the first! This book revolves around Denver Mustangs wide receiver TK Moore and his high school sweetheart, Poppy Patterson. If you like second chance romances you will adore this story! Anyone who read Intercepted, the first book in the Mustangs series, will remember TK: he is young, really good at football, and so sweet. Unfortunately for him, that is not how Poppy remembers him… Poppy was in high school when she got pregnant with TK’s baby. She never went to college and has been (mostly) crushing it as a single mom ever since. Although she doesn’t love her job as a waitress at a strip club, she is able to make ends meet on her own and that is all that matters. Everything is going well until she runs into TK. Will these two be able to reconcile despite their differences? This book will have you laughing out loud one moment and on the edge of your seat the next! It is so heartfelt and it is impossible not to love TK and Poppy. The reader also gets to go back to feminist Denver bar HERS and meet some new member of the WAG club who will stick by Poppy though thick and thin.

The thing is: I do really like the writing style and this book really has a lot of great characters and female friendships. However I have questions about the entire trajectory of this whole thing.
Imagine you spent ten years thinking your boyfriend dropped your 16 y/o pregnant self and went no contact the moment you told him you were pregnant, even letting his mother execute the whole breakup thing. Imagine you meet that guy again after ten years. Would you kiss him and go on a date with him?
Also imagine you spent 10 years thinking you girlfriend has just completely ghosted you. Like for no reason, out of nowhere. And you went on to have a very successful career. Would you go after her for more than an explanation?
And after ten years they meet and they resolve absolutely nothing on their first meeting, then they have a fight on their date, which followed by him meeting his son for the first time, then they have a very emotional talk in the middle of the night, followed by a nice family outing and if I haven't forgotten anything that's all the interaction there is before she agrees to be his girlfriend again.
Like...I get they were together like 10 years ago, but 10 years is a long time especially in that age range and being kicked out by your parents and becoming a single mother for her as well as being wildly successful and generally worshipped for him will absolutely alter your personality. So the rekindling feelings that never quite left-explanation does feel forced.
And I know nothing about kids, but Ace is very calm and even-tempered about the fact that his mom just pulls out some guy and tells him that's his dad, who moves in quite quickly and turns his life upside down and, mind you, takes up time and attention from Ace's mom who he had to himself for 9 years. Like what kind of amazing ways to emotionally regulate and handle change has this kid discovered? Can he teach me?
It also turned quite dark in the second half? Like I do know that football is very dangerous and what we put people through for mere entertainment ist beyond me, but like this is a romance book about a single mom and her highschool sweetheart and I did not expect to be educated in detail about the many ways football is terrible for your health.
It is easy to read, in many ways a captivating story with endearing characters, but...the plot is really something.

Second chance/secret baby romances aren't my usual cup of tea, but this one is excellent! Poppy is an amazing heroine. She stands up for herself and her son, has a great group of friends, and rekindles a romance with the love of her life. I had to warm up to TK, the hero, but Alexa Martin did a great job addressing his issues. My favorite scenes were all about the female friendships, especially the football wives! Definitely recommended!

I think it had a lot of potential but it was too short for me , personally , I think we were like racing trying to reach the ending the soonest possible ...
I loved the Idea , just didn't like the way it was written ...

Another touchdown of a book with a safety on top of book one. It had the all you want from a second chance sports romance along with, great kid, one badass single mom, one horrible bar and one amazing bar, and hot as all hell football player along with all the catty players wives and girlfriends.

Martin's writing got even better, it was smoother and the flow was great. These characters were very strong and developed. Some of the side characters from book one also got better.

Overall, I give this 4 stars and 3.5 steam.

I bought this back in 2019 after reading and loving the first book and then just let it sit. On my shelf. Why?? I’m normally not a fan of second chance romances but I really enjoyed this one. All the characters were such fun! And as a football fan, I appreciated the accuracy of those scenes. This is the perfect summer read and escape!
