An interesting view into the hiring, performance management, and overall management at Google before 2015.
According to this book, Google expands a lot of effort into recruiting, a lot more than what seems to me to be the norm. It also discussed their approach to performance management, promotion, and the distribution of bonuses.
Overall, it was interesting to hear about this, but a lot of the implementation details were left unsaid. This was out of necessity, I'm sure, for otherwise the book would have been an encyclopedia. But a lot of these programs must rely on strong committees with well defined roles and responsibilities, and I wish we heard a little bit more about them.

A necessary read for anyone who manages people, or just wants to make their workplace better. Google's data-driven approach to "people operations" is a vast improvement over typical HR BS. (Although I am curious to hear from my Googler friends as to the reality of this description.)
I loved reading Work Rules! by Laszlo Bock so much that I read it twice. The first time was earlier this year when I listened to it on audio, because I LOVE listening to books read aloud by the authors themselves. This book did not disappoint! It was like having dinner with Bock, with the luxury of many courses over which to hear his honest, compassionate, and funny telling of what he had learned while leading Google's People Operations. The only problem is that I kept wanting to underline things, take pictures of paragraphs, fold down pages, etc ... soooo I promised myself the splurge of a second read of a print copy.
I am so glad I splurged! The book is even more fun and more valuable the second time around. This book has something for everyone ... anyone who has ever worked anywhere ... anyone who cares about the real world implications of social science research ... anyone who has ever used Google ... anyone who enjoys observing human psychology ... anyone who teaches MBAs.
I especially like the concept of "you are a founder" - this idea is shaping how I think about both my role at work and at home. "You must first choose whether you want to be a founder or an employee. It's not a question of literal ownership. It's a question of attitude."

Interesting to read about how Google handles HR. The idea of checklists for helping new people get started is appealing. I found it hard to find many practical lessons in this book.

In short, the book encourages to think about what you are doing and why you are doin it. Measure everything and adapt. Don't just follow the gut feeling. The downside of the book is that it is so Google focused. Of course it is, it is written as an Insight from the inside but I kept feeling like I am reading a too elaborate job ad describing work heaven, by the end of the book I grew tired of the word Googlers as some kind of elite. The super humans that rule the world. Google did a lot of things right and they have enough resources and big enough scale to run experiments and learn from the data so the ideas are good and worth considering.
This book completely based on the view of a HR, how they improved the life of every employee at google. By those successful experience he wrote ideas for other HRs how can they improve their people operation activities.
