Love wins actually. ESPECIALLY for toxic codependent gay bitches.

4/5 stars:

I like this book a lot but I expected a little more from it. I think I prefer K. Ancrum's newest book but I really like her style and can't wait for more from her.

un muy cuestionable libro (casi) canónicamente homosexual sobre dos amigos que intentan ayudarse el uno al otro a no caer en la locura, pero los dos terminan igual de mal

es el libro más extraño que he leído, había olvidado su existencia

“at least you can tell from the outside that i’m batshit. At least it’s not a fucking surprise. You’re all complex and… you act like something is itching to crawl out of your skin. Something bad.”

a beautiful gut-wrenching story about devotion and delusion. August is so much of a giver that he hopes and tries to solve Jack through sheer force of will. Used to suppressing his own needs for others, this comes easy to him.

“You are a world class liar, August Bateman. Every inch of you craves things you can’t afford… or don’t feel like you’re allowed to have.”

but one persons devotion and love and *want* is not enough to outlaw a degenerative hallucinogenic disorder; and it doesn’t matter whether you fell down the rabbit hole or dived in head first, you’re in the madness of wonderland now.

‘ “I think you’re doing your best, but your best is not good enough some times. Sometimes.. you have to stop trying and just let someone else try their best. In order to survive”

It was the worst thing he had ever heard.‘

codependent toxic friendships are somewhat of a specialty of mine, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading a version of that where there was a total desperation to *fix* things and have things be good and each other well.

having an illness isn’t the end of the world - it’s a new one.

I read this book for my libraries Young Adult for Adults book club.

This was such an interesting style of writing. It felt like snapshot into each of the characters lives. I also loved the added pictures thrown in throughout the book. I think the story might have worked better if the characters were in college instead of high school but otherwise a great read with an important message.

three stars ∗ tbh my favorite part about this book was the note from the author at the end.

this was so different from what i thought it would be? i didn’t expect it to be so heavily influenced by mental illness. seeing how august drastically suffered made me realize that i look like august during my worst.

even though i have a mental illness, i don’t read too many books dealing with the issue because it makes me scared. it makes me feel guilty. but this book was somewhat of an eye opener in the sense that it made me realize that everyone is going through something.

idk. i’m trying to be philosophical rn but i’m really tired and i just binge read this amazing book in like two hours? the short story is: i really enjoyed this book! august and jack were such complex characters and i really related to august for reasons i’m not entirely sure of.

also...i shipped august and jack since the first page. it totally magnified when [spoiler?] jack gave august a tattoo?? like yes please and thank you.
dark emotional fast-paced

He was pretty sure he was in some kind of abusive relationship.

i did not think i was going to be the biggest fan of this book at first, but now i can not quite remember why. i think the writing felt a bit ….? but then i got completely sucked into it. jackaugust i will never forget you
