Crying shitting throwing up. A book that I wish I could go back in time to give my 17 year old self.

This is the book that broke my reading slump! It's a really interesting look into two high school seniors and their relationship while they both battle difficult home lives, interpersonal problems, and mental health struggles.

I think the way mental health gets handled in this book felt pretty real, which isn't a huge surprise since the author's note at the end mentions that Ancrum had gone through something similarly harrowing growing up. I do wish that we'd seen a little bit more at the end instead of just leaving off where it does. I totally understand why it's left there, though -- just personal preference on my part.

Also, the way the (physical) book's pages change slowly throughout is really something to behold! It added a whole other level of immersion that really got me invested. And I think the use of short, individually titled sections aided in the pacing and the overall feeling that this was all going by fast for the character whose perspective we see from.

If that ending didn't happen ... man, I would've lost my shit people!

This review will probably have a shit ton of spoilers.. or it might not. Who knows!?

The Wicker King is a god damn tease. It makes you fall in love with August and Jack so freaking easily! Then you get even more teasing sexual moments and at one point you might scream at the book, "KISS ALREADY DAMMIT!"

Or that could just be me.

August and Jack have the best kind of relationship. They are THE best of friends. Heck I would love to join their little wolf pack. I loved their friendship so much that I wasn't even bothered with what they were doing. Heck yeah, you can burn shit guys. Sleeping?? That's for the weak. I just loved them together and I hated when they were apart. It broke me probably as much as it broke them. Maybe more.

Now besides their epic friendship/relationship, there were a couple of twists and turns thrown my way. It definitely kept me more engaged and turning the pages.. well, I guess tapping the page son my kindle a lot faster. I just kept wishing for more from these two. Once I got that more, I was fucking ecstatic!

The ending was AHMAZING! Again, if it didn't happen that way I probably would've walked away from my kindle for like 500 days until I got a different ending. It was perfect!! Jack and August were my everything. They still are. If it wasn't for them, even the supporting characters were beautifully written. Rina and her damn sass was amazing. The twins, Peter and Roger, were adorable and equally lovable. Gordie was lovable at first but then became a bitch in the end. Then there's Alex, who was AHMAZING! I loved this group of weirdos so much. Their friendships and talks gave me life.

Overall, I loved this book. It's my favorite read for this month so far. Yes, I know it's the end of April but who the fuck cares?!? It's my favorite book for April. That's it - I have said it!

An unexpected four stars.
Reading up until about 80% of the book, I was ready to give it a two-star review, but the rest of the narrative changed my mind. This book was marketed as a psychological thriller, but I took it more as a contemporary romance that tackled heavy topics such as mental illness, power, irresponsibility of those authority, and neglect.
Worth the read.

Really disappointing.

I really wanted to like this book but couldn't get over the toxic nature of their relationship and codependency. I did appreciate the author's letter at the end though.
