This book haunts me in the best way and I’m so glad I got to read a physical copy the first time around because it truly added so much to the experience as a whole. Every reread of this book is as gut wrenching as the first and the ONLY reason it has 4.5 stars instead of 5 is because I had no idea what the hell was going on for like the first 25-50 pages or so and it severely threw me out of the book and its respective world.

The fact that I finished this book at 3 AM on my birthday just feels fitting.

I have not had a book make me feel things the way this book did in a VERY long time. Dare I say almost a decade. This book is absolutely phenomenal and once I can gather my thoughts a bit better I will be sure to update this and gush about this book even more. I’d give it 10 stars if I could. Amazing.

This features an INTENSE co-dependent relationship between two friends, one of whom is experiencing hallucinations/premonitions. The book’s art design is really amazing, and the very short chapters/sections gave me a very different reading pace than I’m used to. But like, while there is romantic obsession here, it is NOT a romance. (The pages near the end are black because it is DARK.) It has a slightly hopeful ending, and a follow up story that I'm going to check out, but think will be an allegory or something.

love!!! LOVE LOVE

3.5/5 This could have been a four star book maybe even 4.5 but sadly it lost me in the resolution of the plot and details and lack of discussion/poor discussion around the.mental health themes. I loved, loved the writing style - easy and really nicely paced (I did listen to the audiobook). The relationships were very well written and believable but the plot really fell apart for me. I feel like this had the unfortunate makings of YA novel that felt like it was written by a teenager because when it came to the plot the logistics were so off for me. There were adults doing things for teenagers that adults would never do, just ugh, that shit takes me completely out of the story, it's a total shame. If you're better at suspending disbelief than me, maybe it won't be a problem for you. It was an interesting plot for sure, I just wish it had gone a different way. I had a lot of questions about why things ended up the way they did and there was never going to be answers because the logistics of the criminal and medical systems and honestly mental health were not well portrayed here. I picked this up on a whim with very little knowledge of but honestly people should definitely be aware that, IMO, this covers mental health in a pretty triggering (read poorly done) way and I'm never sensitive to that topic but this seriously irked me.

One of the best YA books I've read in a long time because the harsh, complicated nature of being a neglected teen is not dumbed down or softened for readers. Because of this, the book feels so real and raw and beautiful. Sure, the main characters are immature but not in ways that is sometimes so annoying in other teen reads. Throughout the whole thing K. ancrum is so clear with why they are acting as they do and your heart is pulled along on the journey.

This is one of the best books I have read this book had me worried and it had me crying I love jack and August with all my heart and I can't wait to read more of this authors work x

"All virtues not granted at birth are taught to you by life, one way or another."

If I only had one word to describe this book with, I would say it's important. I don't want to give out too many spoilers, but I feel like this is a very important and thought-provoking read that more people need to pick up. There are all sorts of different mental illnesses portrayed in this, and it was honestly kind of scary to see just how bad things can get for people. Obviously this is a work of fiction, but what was portrayed in The Wicker King were very real and very serious conditions.

I read this with the Dragons & Tea book club, and I'm so glad that I did.
