Veronica Roth’s first novel for adults is a must read! Gripping and exciting with characters that both draw you in and keep you guessing I was desperate to know how the story would resolve but also didn’t want it to end. I found when I was doing other things I was wondering what was going to happen next, and felt bad for leaving the characters until I could get back to the book. I really hope there is a sequel.
I was hesitant to read this after the divergent series but glad I picked it up. The twist almost halfway through is what made the book way more interesting! I was getting tired of Sloane and her whining. Don’t get me wrong, I think PTSD is real and can be debilitating but her character just grated on me the entire book.
This was a cool book, it followed my preferred style of a very typical narrative in this case 'chosen one defeats dark one' (wich is the literal terminology they use lol) but with a big twist- the heroes are adult and already scarred by battle.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I see a lot of similarity between Sloane and tris from divergent. Not just the dark and stories, and sharpness. Its also the resentment of power that is too much to know and weild, and the resentment of responsibility that is unfair and also necessary. Oddly I think my favorite scene was the description of the dive.
Its a sign of good writing that I sort of felt like I was going crazy with Sloane. I wish we had gotten more of albie and maybe, hopefully we will get more in memories.

Fantasy is normally not my thing, but this one sucked me right in. Even when certain moments were telegraphed, Roth always managed to turn you on your head. I definitely want to read the next one.
This took me a long, long time to read, but that's not indicative of my enjoyment of the book. In the end, I really liked Chosen Ones. It just took me a hot minute, and I blame it on the first third of the book.
Veronica Roth wanted to explore the question of "what happens to our heroes after they defeat the big bad evil of their time?" Chosen Ones picks up with the lives of 5 heroes 10 years after they've killed the Dark One, and part 1 is a reflection on how not ok they're doing. Learning the background of the characters, in particular Sloane (our primary MC), is important, but after a while, I genuinely started to think that the main plot of this book was going to be a recollection of the battle from 10 years ago. It isn't until I got to part 2 that I discovered the plot for this book. At that point, the plot picks up (although it remains a bit drawn out). I wish that part 1 was more enjoyable or at least shorter.
What I really liked:
- Sloane is rough and unapologetic, but she's real. I appreciated her grittiness, and I appreciated that Roth delved into the mental health side of our heroes. Suicide and PTSD were both at play in this book, which makes sense considering what our Chosen Ones went through.
-Similar to above, I enjoyed the more mature, adult writing of this book- the violence and dialogue weren't sugarcoated for us.
-Dry, sarcastic humor. This isn't a knee slapper kind of book, but there were one liners tossed into the mix that genuinely made my laugh.
- The unique magical world that we're introduced to. Instead of people being born with magic, it's basically available to all people. The "workings" (like spells but there aren't incantations) are done by hitting different frequencies while desiring an outcome. I thought this was a fresh take on magic that made for an interesting world.

I was super excited for this book because I am a huge fan of Divergent. It has a lot of potential at the beginning. But I felt like the story was too dragging, too long or too slow. The ending was also far-fetched. The world was supposed to end when Nero died and instead, Sloane created a mixed world of things she prefers when she killed him. Hmmm.... What?
