This is an interesting fantasy centered around witchcraft and the use of power, both magical and military. However, I would not recommend this book to people who struggle with depression, especially if they struggle with self harm or suicide. There is also ableism regarding mental illness. However, the characters are intriguing and there was a twist in the plot that I didn’t see coming.

I didn’t know what to think when I started this book, but I ended up struggling to keep with the buddy read schedule.

I loved the magic system (and that spell casting rules are at the top of chapters) and how we see them in real time.

I love deception and Rune and Gideon are wonderful in their attempts.  The characters are flushed and the book contains great moments between characters besides our love interests!

What didn’t work for me is that we never see the Crimson Moth actually succeed in rescuing witches which I think would have worked.
As well, Gideon exhausted me at times, especially towards the end. 

Overall I can’t wait for the sequel.

I read this book in one sitting!! The setting & world building was easy to understand so I was quick to dive in to the story. I enjoyed the will they/won't they tension. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because there were a couple plot twists that I suspected before the reveal... Can't wait for the next book!!
