Wowza! I was not expecting the turn of events. šŸ¤Æ Ciccarelli provides the reader a delectable game of cat and mouse. Rune is a witch hiding in plain sight. Her alter ego, the Crimson Moth, is responsible for rescuing other witches before they are purged. Gideon, the captain of the Blood Guard, wants nothing more than to catch the Moth. The two unwittingly court each other for his or her own benefitā€”Rune, to gain intel in order to save more witches, and Gideon, to attempt to uncover secrets in his search for the Moth. I blasted through almost half of this book in one day. It is definitely difficult for me to say more without revealing some spoilers. Wtf is going to happen in book two???

This book also made me feel seen as a police wife. People often make assumptions about Gideon solely based on his profession as captain of the Blood Guard. Even Rune, a witch herself, is quick to defend him; he is a man trying to do what he feels is right. Also, Runeā€™s upset when Gideon apologizes via telegram that he is going to be late because something came upā€¦ Oh, honey. Youā€™ll get used to it. šŸ˜†

I recommend this for fans of the Divine Rivals duology. It was a thrill.

I did not expect the whole plot of the book was going to be ā€œget Rune naked and have sex with her!!!ā€ This is a YA ffs. Rune is dumb and bad at not getting caught like a typical YA, but itā€™s so overly sexual in a non spicy but just objectifying way itā€™s INSANE. I felt extremely uncomfortable the whole time. And itā€™s extremely bloody for a YA, which I didnā€™t mind but it was mostly just objectification of each other especially Rune as the female lead. Especially when the male main lead purposely makes her feel bad for being ā€œaboveā€ his station like she can help it any more than she can. Pathetic man child. One star. No idea why even whole ass adults are raving about this book.

Heartless Hunter is a ā€˜new adultā€™ genre book which started out as a loose retelling of the Scarlet Pimpernel(I love that the author brings up the original book towards the beginning of the story). After a while though,it morphed into something more. This book raises question of is there ever really a ā€˜good sideā€™ when people are at war.
This book was high on angst which is centered around miscommunication. While I usually am the first to say nope to this trope, in this storyline I was absolutely here for it!I personally thought it worked exactly how it needed to.  I am absolutely on pins and needles wanting to know what will happen next!

I had a hard time putting this down! I am now eagerly anticipating the sequel and am bummed we have to wait until 2025 to get it. It read very fast despite being a medium-paced book.
