This book acts as a self help/ memoir. It is a relief to see a published book about workplace racial trauma that so many of us as black women have and will experience. I’ve also had similar experiences and it felt good to see this published and validated. I’ve met other black women who have had the same experiences and have seen how much it has impacted their mental AND physical health.

I would definitely recommend this book for white accomplices and allies who want to better understand the perspective and experiences of black women in the workplace and to better show up for them. I like that she acknowledges that this is her experience alone. However, the fact that she makes 6 figures and works in corporate is and will be unrelatable to the many of women who don’t make nearly the same.

I don’t particular find self help books…helpful, and this was no different mostly. But it can be a good guide.

The book was alright. It is relevant, it is needed, but it also didn’t do anything for me. And it’s not the book’s fault, it’s mine. I acknowledge that I absolutely loathe self help books yet I continue to read them because a part of me believes that I will one day read a book that will change my life. But that hasn’t happened yet, and I continue to pick up book after book and get disappointed when I find the same advice being repeated.

I don’t want to undermine the importance for black women and other women of color to find healing from racial trauma. It is absolutely pivotal for career advancement and our own mental health and sanity. So if you read this book, I do hope that you take something from its pages and if not, at least be comforted by the fact that you’re not alone in the racial trauma you’ve experienced.

Important read that centers healing from workplace trauma and systemic oppression, especially for those of us whose identities are most marginalized by institutionalized racism, Black women. Part memoir, part handbook, this book is a must-read for those who hold privilege (and therefore systemic power) in workplaces who seek to dismantle their/our roles in perpetuating harm and shift policies and practices for our collective future.

This book is a must read for all Black women. I have never felt so seen and understood. It should be required reading for all women, especially those who call themselves "allies".
