Great to catch up with Taylor and Turtle after reading The Bean Trees. I'm a big BK fan, and expected to enjoy this book, which I did.  Plot is complex but believable (despite some parts seeming unbelievable at times)! and the end is satisfying despite some loose ends which would tie up nicely in a third part....

Had I read this on its own, it would probably have gotten three stars. But as a sequel to The Bean Trees, I was very disappointed in it. It continues the story of Turtle and Taylor, but this time they're on the run from the Cherokee nation. The Cherokee have noticed that Turtle is being raised by someone NOT Cherokee, and they apparently have laws about that kind of thing. Taylor's actions don't seem real. I didn't get lost in this book; I was aware the entire time that this was just a book and that's why the actions of the characters sometimes seemed forced. And I really couldn't stand the Cherokee lawyer who was trying to track them down. Bottom line: Read The Bean Trees and stop.

After reading Demon Copperfield I picked up this book by the same author. I honestly attempted to start reading this book twice and couldn’t get into it. On the third try after making it further into the story line I finally became intrigued. I am back and forth on her writing style, she is very descriptive and clever. However sometimes it’s too wordy and I lose my focus. There are a number of punchlines or almost quotable sentences that come at the end of paragraphs that either make me think, I should write that down or I feel the other way and think, gag me with a spoon! My final opinion is that it’s a good book with a great storyline about Cherokee families. I enjoyed reading her descriptions about Oklahoma as we have family from there and much of it rang true and was nostalgic.

I love Barbara Kingsolver, but this has to be my least favorite of all of her books. Everything was just too coincidental, while still not making sense.

SPOILERS:

A frustrating book from the start. I like the character reasonably well, but its just too crazy that every single person involved in this happens to be from a one mile radius.

And the hubbub about Alice being Cherokee as much as Sugar, why didn't Turtle's mom just sign up to be Cherokee as well much earlier on? Or even have that mentioned EVER?

Anyway, I like her writing but I don't highly recommend this book.
