I've never read novels related to some book. So I haven't had any expectations regarding this one, but this piece felt like ordinary chapter extracted from book. I found really confusing the fact that Claudine and Claude sister's name was changing through all piece. In the end I assume this novel was okay, nothing special at all.

This is a collection of short stories, all featuring Sookie Stackhouse. Each of the stories stands alone. I didn’t feel at all lost, despite never having read any of the Sookie Stackhouse series before. Relationships between characters were clearly explained. I found Sookie and her friends to be likeable and fun characters. This isn’t great literature but it was a fun read. Oh, and there’s just the right amount of sexual tension.

If you haven’t read any of the Sookie books, you’ll definitely find some spoilers herein. This was the first one I read or listened to, so I appreciated that Harris repeated certain basic information. I think a steady fan of this series would have been bored by that.

The book on CD is narrated by Johanna Parker, who does a fine job of capturing the southern charm of Sookie, the underlying menace of some of the situations, and the tender emotions of the final story.

Hopefully this was a relevant bridge to the next in the series.

Charlaine Harris’ first short story compilation of all the Sookie Stackhouse short stories. It includes all five of the Sookie centric stories, some of while I had previously read.

“Fairy Dust”
Takes place after Dead to the World. The fairy twins enlist the help of Sookie in finding who killed their sibling. A cute story that gives some insight into the lives of fairies.

“One Word Answer”
Also takes place after Dead to the World. Sookie finds out the fate of her cousin, Hadley, and that she has inherited the estate. She meets the Queen for the first time. I found this story is important to read before reading the next books in the series as you may feel like there is a missing piece.

“Dracula Night”
Takes place after All Together Dead. Sookie is invited to a party of Dracula at Fangtasia by Eric, the only other day aside from Halloween that vampires celebrate. Very fun story that gives a little insight into Eric and Sookie’s relationship.

“Lucky”
Takes place after From Dead to Worse. Sookie is hired by her insurance agent to find out who had been breaking into his office and looking through files. Sookie enlists the help of her roommate Amelia and finds a stranger in town. Not my favorite but cute.

“Gift Wrap”
Also takes place after From Dead to Worse. As Christmas approaches, Sookie finds herself rescuing a member of the supes so is injured in the woods. She soon finds herself the recipient of one of the best presents ever. A cute holiday tale, but not sure it really fits in with the rest of the storyline exactly where it fell.

One Word Answer is one of the first short stories that Harris wrote to accompany the Southern Vampire Series, about Sookie Stackhouse, included in the short story compliation Bite.

In this particular short story, Sookie finds out the fate of her rarely mentioned cousin Hadley who ran away years ago and who Sookie has had no contact with. I never realized how important these short stories could be until I started book 5 of the series and felt like I had missed a key part to the entire series.

For anyone who has recently started the series, or is interested in doing so, I highly recommend picking up at least this little tidbit before starting book 5 or you may feel at a loss much like I was. While this is the first short I have read, I am going to definitely try and make it a priority in my reading to include these along with the main books.

Eventually I would like to read the entire Bite compilation, but time does not permit me to do so at this time.

Over this bunch of short stories especially the last one with Sookie’s “Christmas gift” from her Fae great grandfather.

It was nice to get back into Sookie's world, but after reading this I don't feel I was missing anything or that I gained anything. Short, quick reads, but I guess I was expecting more somehow. I can't wait for the next Sookie book in May 2010!
