BOOK REVIEW: MEET CUTE BY HELENA HUNTING
A fangirl, an enemies to lovers romance with a helping of Raising Helen thrown into the mix. Get ready for a little steam, a few laughs & a lot of heart.

DAX & KAILYN
I love Kailyn. She’s cool, calm, collected. Best yet, she has a total Fangirl side. I can relate! When she meets her teenage fantasy at law school, things don’t go swimmingly for her.

Dax is a mess. I imagine him as the guy I would love to hate. But, you just can’t hate him! He’s slick but genuine. Cool yet unrefined. I loved getting to know him & see his softer side.

STEAM INDEX
Just like the title, this book is very cute. There are some racy parts, but it’s definitely mild on the steam scale. That’s totally okay with me. The steam matches the story arc very well. Let me tell you something. The ending has me GIDDY! If you’ve read it, let’s talk about it! I’m sliming right now thinking about it!

WITH A HEAVY HEART
If you’re like me, expectations can make or break a book. I must admit; I wasn’t expecting this book to be such an emotional read. Luckily, there is a great mix of humor & romance to offset some of the more emotional aspects of the book. Hunting ensures there is a great balance.

THE VERDICT
I am Really Into This book!

Much like one of my 2019 favorites, The Friend Zone, Meet Cute adds in many discussions surrounding periods. Yes, women have periods! I love this because it makes the conversations authentic & believable. Sidenote: keep the guy who knows what kind of pads, tampons & painkillers you prefer.

Special thanks to Helena Hunting & Read Forever for providing my copy in exchange for an honest & fair review.

4 Stars - I recommend if you enjoy humorous contemporary romance.

When Kailyn meets her TV crush, Daxton Hughes, and finds out that he goes to her law school, she instantly makes a fool of herself. She also gains a very gorgeous rival for the remainder of her law school program. When he throws her under the bus at the end of school, she never wants to see him again. Years later they meet again, setting up a trust for his younger sister, Emme. When his parents unexpectedly die he becomes his Emme's guardian and inherits his parent's estate. He's trying to navigate his own emotions, let alone issues that preteen girls deal with. And his aunt is suing for custody. The two will be legally brought together for the good of Emme and change opinions of each other as they go along.

This was my first book by Helena Hunting. I thought it was really cute, and actually had a decent amount of depth to it too. It definitely had the super funny parts, but also bits that made me teary. I thought that the awkward meeting was funny and cute, and set them up for an awkward reunion later on. I honestly loved the parts with Emme the most. I'm apparently a sucker for the "single dad" trope, even though he's not Emme's dad, this really pulled at my heartstrings. I thought that Dax trying to navigate preteen parenthood was super funny, and of course the period section was particularly hysterical! I enjoyed the chemistry between Dax and Kailyn, but I loved the emotional depth even more. Overall I would recommend this one if you enjoy contemporary romantic comedies.

Right After Reading:

Cute! I love a single dad. All of the teenage girl stuff was too funny.

the most compelling part was the relationship between kailyn (?) and the 13-year old-girl emme. I feel like their relationship was written well and honestly kind of shocking within the context of a romcom novel. I don’t really care about a lot of the other details

Powerful and Touching

Meet Cute really tugged at my heart and soul. Helena Hunting just has a way of drawing you in almost immediately and I’m always so happy to go on that journey. Having read some of her previous series I wasn’t sure what to expect with this particular stand alone, but she of course didn’t let me down. This book had a very emotional storyline for me. It deals with loss, family, betrayal, and so much more. Amongst all that you get a great romance story between Dax, a former teen actor who is now a successful lawyer and Kailyn his former peer from Law School who he loved debating and competing with for top marks.

Kailyn was probably Dax’s biggest fan until he betrayed her in school and their paths don’t cross again for years until Dax’s parents hire Kailyn to be the attorney to setup a trust for his sister Emma. Dax has no idea there’s any kind of rift between Kailyn and himself, but when tragedy strikes his family he suddenly finds himself having to work with Kailyn directly. Dax becomes his little sister’s guardian practically overnight. He finds himself now as a parent, brother and grieving son trying to navigate this new life. Soon Kailyn and Dax are forced to confront their past and deal with the spark that is still here in the present, all while even more stressful situations arise.

Although it’s sometimes difficult to read about loss, I know it’s safe to emotionally invest in these characters and their story because Helena always writes with such care and sensitivity. As someone who has experienced loss that I’m still mourning I appreciate that so much. Thank you Helena for a beautifully written story.

Not high class literature, but enjoyable as a beach read. Predictable tension with a happy ending. Characters are not very deep but pleasant to know.

Did I pick up this book purely based on the cover and title? Duh! Of course I did. I was even swooning over the simple sans serif font.

This was a breezy, sweet romance with a little bit of heft. It was an easy read, one that didn’t require much brainpower. So while it won't earn a spot on my favorites shelf, I have a feeling many other readers will love it.

However, if you're in the mood for more Meet Cute goodness I recommend "Meet Cute: Some People Are Destined to Meet". This YA short story anthology was such a delight. The stories were as diverse as the authors. It was refreshing to see a collection of stories that included POC, gay, straight and transgender characters. It makes me happy to know that stories like this exist. Not every story was a winner, but I had many favorites.

5 RED AISLE CROWNS

MEET CUTE by Helena Hunting is a breath of fresh air, and maybe that is because it doesn’t really fit into a trope. Meet Cute is its own entity. It has a splash of romcom, a dash of drama, and a sprinkling of reflection.

What readers can expect, as one does with Helena Hunting, is a cast of characters to love and adore. Dax, child star turned lawyer, is just too much for words. From the time readers meet him in college to we see him again as a grown man, readers will find him utterly charming. He is laid back and kind, and his compassion for his sister Emme certainly helps in the swoon department. By seeing him through the eyes of our heroine, Kailyn, readers get to see a man struggling with loss and new responsibilities with complete grace and heart. God, I love him.

Kailyn is the perfect Helena character. She is a bit adorkable with her fan girl status, but I love the confidence she has with it. She isn’t ashamed of it, and I love how it became a part of their relationship. Kailyn also has a huge heart that is filled with compassion because of her past, and her philanthropic endeavors just makes her an even more amazing heroine. She brings a calm and reflective aspect to Dax, and they complement each other in the best way.

Meet Cute was just pure entertainment with reflective moments to really make you consider what matters in life. It is filled with characters who are finding it out for themselves, and characters who are willing to pick the parts and people of life that matter most. As a couple, they are fun, and their moments together a mixture of sweet and sexy. The plot itself is predictable in spots, the conflict easily identifiable, and normally this is a negative for me, but I didn’t care with Meet Cute because of my love for the resolution and the EPILOGUE (one of the best I’ve read in some time) and more importantly my love for Dax and Kailyn. I was swept away by them.

Meet Cute is more than a romcom. It is a bit of everything all rolled up into one must read romance that will have you laughing out loud, swiping away some tears, and wearing the biggest grin at the end of their journey. One of my favorite Helena books.

ARC received in exchange for an honest review

Soo much going on!! And some of it was just wildly out there. I think there would have been more success if just 1 angle was stuck to, but there was just so much happening. There were some great tender moments that made me like the book more, but overall just a middle of the road book.

Super cute fun romance. And fast. Like 3-4 hours of actual reading time? Will definitely read more by this author.
