I seem to be on a bit of a roll reading books about women who happen to be witches who take on the patriarchy. Let's hope it spills over into real life sooner rather than later. Lucky St James and her grandmother Stella are about to be evicted from the east end Toronto apartment when Lucky discovers she might have a higher purpose other than dead end temp jobs. They head out on road trip that takes them from Salem, MA to Pennsylvania, to Missouri and finally New Orleans. Although this book is about a magical world, the challenges the characters face are all too real. It is both very funny and terrifying and I sincerely hope Dimaline has already started the sequel.

I was completely captivated by this book, which tells the story of a young woman who, despite the tough challenges life has thrown at her, strives to better herself and look after her grandmother. Embarking on a mission to ignite a wave of female empowerment, she battles against a formidable foe that has long plagued witches. The narrative of each coven member is deeply engaging, illustrating that love, self-acceptance, confidence, and the bond of sisterhood are the keys to mending the world we inhabit. Oh, how I yearn for a Venco in everyone's life!
