I wanted more from this. I don’t think the witchcraft was developed enough.

I really wanted to like this book more than I did, which is how I also felt about Empire of Wild. I thought the overall idea of this book was interesting, but the execution fell flat. The pacing was really inconsistent and I found myself zoning out at times because I was bored. I liked Lucky as a character and her dynamic with her grandma, Stella. The stakes never truly felt high enough though, which bothered me. I just wanted more. I am also incredibly disappointed that there were a few HP references, which is why I knocked my review down from 3 to 2 stars.

Cherie Dimaline’s BEST YET!! How incredible! Couldn’t put it down. While a story, Venco is so full of Truth. Past, present, and future. This is possible, all of us to join together to form our Covens. We can band together to change the world. Hex the Fucking Patriarchy!

some of the dialogue felt cringe (no one can ever write “we are the children of the witches you didn’t burn” again without it being so embarrassing to read), but on net, good witchy book. its gotta be setting up for a sequel, which i would probably read. i honestly feel like the magic system wasn’t fleshed out all that well, considering i have no idea what witches in this universe can actually do. the christian prayer parts were also a little odd, but i guess
