Audiobook- why is this a popular book?!? Everyone was high and didn't realize the book said nothing and nothing really happened. I think there was a generation that romanticized hitch hiking.

Wow. Halfway through, I just wanted it to be over. The only true ending ever written in a book.

A huge letdown. I found this really underwhelming. I’ll start by saying it’s probably impossible for me to fully understand the influence of this book without the context of living in the early 20th century. Im sure that in a time of extremely straight edged living it probably felt overwhelming to hit the road with $13 in your pocket in search of your “kicks.” But I suppose I just had a different expectation for the book’s content. I was hoping for more description of the road and the towns being passed through, especially seeing as how I’ve been through several of the places mentioned and would’ve loved some more insight into what it was like now vs then. Instead I mostly got nonsensical ramblings and behavioral descriptions on a seemingly pseudo psychopathic Dean Moriarty. I was surprised at how insufferable I found the character based on Neal Cassady given that members of the Grateful Dead have mentioned him and Kerouac by name as influences on their worldview. I don’t think I’d last five minutes in a room with Neal Cassady. But again, I suppose it’s due to a lack of context.

When I was in high school, this was the coolest book ever. I've since come to recognize its shoddy treatment of women and what a bunch of losers the characters really are. Totally outgrown it.

I absolutely understand how this book is not for everyone. But personally, I got completely sucked in, and felt like I was there. The writing style is energetic, and unique yet familiar. It felt like a 10 page letter from a close friend, exactly how Kerouac got inspired. Brilliant.

Rambling, incoherent… it read like Kerouac had never seen an editor, like he didn’t even fathom the concept of an editor
Audiobook accompaniment somehow made it harder to understand?
