Well, let’s see, to be honest with you, this is a book I think is popular for the sake of…well, not sure why it’s so popular. I rated it a 3 only for the sake of the language which I liked, and at times I thought was brilliant. As for the story itself I eventually became bored and noticed there was no plot whatsoever, just a rehashing of the same road trip. But to be really fair there are moments of genius but not to the level to of an elevated spot as a modern classic in my opinion. This was a favorite of Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain and others that I’ve admired for their artistry but for me it just didn’t hit. If I had read this maybe in my teen years it would have clicked more possibly. I hated the glorification of “Dean Moriarty”, who in real life was based off of Neal Cassidy. I don’t think there was any reason to glorify him. I intend to read other Jack Kerouac books. I did like the language. It was just the story that I thought overrated and exaggerated at times.

This was not a fun read. I hated all of the characters and was SO BORED. This was so dumb. There were like three good lines in the entire book and the rest was either gross or disheartening or both. I am such a big fan of the beats that I thought I’d really like this, but I was just trudging through it, hoping it would get better, but it never did. The only reason I gave it two stars instead of one was the fact that there are a few instances of prose that are really good and really reminiscent of what I love about the beats, and it mentioned Notre Dame which was probably the highlight of my reading experience. I just feel like this has so much potential but ultimately falls flat due to its repetitiveness (which I understand is part of the point) and its pedophilic characters. “The great American novel” my ass—read Little Women or The Great Gatsby or Beloved or literally any other American book and it’ll probably be better than this one.

Read the whole book in one day - front to back - merely because I didn’t feel like spending more time on it than necessary.

How is it even possible that I have never read Jack Kerouac? This book was fantastic! His writing is incredibly descriptive and engaging. I feel like I have been on the road with him!

It felt like I was just reading about a bunch of stupid assholes a lot of the time. I really enjoyed the style and the setting however and Dean was certainly a magnetic character.

I thought that this book was a waste of time until I reached the end, then I was glad I had finished it.
