I read On The Road as a young adult when everyone was reading it, and it left me cold. Silly girls hang out with silly boys and do very silly things seemed to be the basic plot.
But it turns out, you have to have actually seen the road. You have to have visited the huge expanses of deserts and plains of the North American west to understand a little more about the background, why these folks do what they do, and why the actions of individuals can seem so miniscule and ultimately irrelevant in the face of such vastness.
I still don't think it deserves all the accolades. But I certainly get it a bit better.

this book never gets old.
"my witness is the empty sky" - Jack Kerouac.
"my witness is the empty sky" - Jack Kerouac.
More of a fever dream than a story, this book is maybe the closest thing I’ve ever read to “the great American novel.” It wanders off into the city, the desert, and then eventually into a speed-dream vision of nature’s majesty on the highway. I love it, even if it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.
Although this did end up giving me a comforting feeling every time I came back to the book, the plot didn't feel very exciting/developed. Maybe I was just looking for something a little more exciting.
