Worth the read as a modern classic. It wasn’t half as sordid or substance-soaked as I thought it would be, but a pretty easy read. If you like the rolling ease of modern American classics, it’s worth the time, but it won’t change your life.

It took me a long time to finish this book. I noticed I had to be in a certain mood to be able to actually make progress on it. I had a complicated relationship with this book, I can't say for sure if I liked it or not. There are some chapters you just can't stop reading but then you would hit a chapter that is just a slog to go through.
This is not a standard novel. I wasn't aware of the context of this book before I read it so it was not what I expected at first. This is a dramatization of the author's experience, it does not follow a traditional story and I would argue there's not a lot of plot it in. There is, however, beauty in living through the author's eyes. You're actually transported to 1950's America and get to experience what life was for the characters back then.
The main characters are unlikeable... so much so that I thought of not finishing reading, but when I realized these were real people living these crazy adventures I understood the characters were not made to be liked, but to reflect a bit of their real identities in paper.

I'd been meaning to read this book for a while because it's supposed to be really good, a modern classic, "life-changing," etc. I just didn't get it, though. I enjoyed some of it and there are a few parts that gave me stuff to think about, but overall it's a bit too aimless for me.
