I think I could do the digital or print version of this a lot better. I just cannot handle the way the audiobook pronounces Welsh words.

4 ⭐️
Let me just drop some bars by Tracy Deonn to start this review
“Just because my hair takes up space doesn’t mean it’s dirty, Theresa.”
"But grief isn't a competition.
I's not an identical pain that we all meet one day when death finds us. It's a monster, personalized by our love and memories to devour us just so. Grief is suffering, tailored."
"The ancestors of _____ will not stand for chains of any kind on our people, ever again."
The amount of times I got the chills can’t be counted. Lots and lots of thoughts on this book that I may have to come back and keep adding too (spoiler free).
⭐️ What I loved -
-First and foremost, the writing and themes. Tracy Deonn knows how to weave reality and fantasy together perfectly while hitting all of your feels. To get grief, racism, romance and self-discovery right along side magic, creatures, demons and ancient possessions to work seamlessly in one book is a feat.
- This book does not stop. There are no real down times, it is constant action and twists and turns. So despite it being a thick book, it feels so quick.
-The world building that I really struggled with in book one really comes together and gets clear in book two.
-There are some really unique elements and imagery in this book that I think you’d be hard pressed to find anywhere else. Some of these scenes in here are transcendent and I won’t forget them ever.
-The characters. I loved that this book narrowed down the characters that were constantly on page. I connected so much more Bree, Sel, William, and Alice this time around.
⭐️ What didn’t work for me-
-Despite everything that went on, I found it to be overall pretty predictable. I unfortunately saw most of the big twists coming and sort of predicted the end. I’m disappointed that I didn’t feel more surprise.
— One thing that really bugged me was there were certain scenes that had so much build up and were so important to the plot but concluded in 3-4 pages yet conversations (more like miscommunications) between characters lasted double that. I’m not a fan of miscommunication to this extent, but I could have forgiven it if more time was given to those scenes I really wanted more from.
-I’m not taking anything off for this but I need to note that some of these characters got on my NERVES. I know they are young but some of their decision making was infuriating.
Overall, this was a crazy, thrilling, and emotional ride. Highly recommend this series and I will absolutely be jumping into the next book. While it’s not my favorite fantasy plot ever (so far) it does offer so much more depth and unique fantastical elements that I don’t get to read often.
