Revisiting this book was a nice treat for me amidst all the miserable things I've been reading. When I was a kid reading this, I never picked up that the two grandfathers are probably queer-coded and thoroughly enjoyed that as an adult (especially knowing now that PB has a husband and kids!). This book is absolutely where I get my humor from- or at least is in part responsible for it alongside Tumblr (my beloathed/beloved). I'm a little torn as to whether I still like the character of Cass as an adult. I didn't remember how dismissive she was of Max-Ernest, and I was left feeling bad at how often she did that especially knowing how ADHD-coded he is. She does change by the end, and I enjoyed the apology/thanks she gave to him after being saved. If I continue the series and finish it again, I'm curious as to whether my opinion of Cass' characterization will change.
I would've given this 1 star, but I had to consider the promising story that was somehow trashed sometime after ***SPOILER ALERT STOP READING NAO******** Cass decided to play hero and be stupid.
The story had promise during the first few chapters. A secret! Hooray! It was interesting. And then it went downhill after that. The author was very Lemony Snicket-ty, he rambled uselessly, and then the characters. Geeez. How lame. The ending, even more lame. The author. He rambles. On and on and on.
In the hands of another author like, I don't know, Rick Riordan, maybe, this would have been a great and enjoyable book. I tell you, the story had promise. It really did.
