2.5⭐️ Wanted to enjoy this one, & possibly a right book wrong time scenario, but I just couldn’t get into it. All sorts of creepy atmospheres evoked but they seemed to butt against each other and not be sure which kind of creepy it was going for? I was a fan of the writing style though, so not discounting the idea of trying another Winton in the future.

Nothing about this particularly excited me. Luckily it is a brief book so the feeling of "meh" didn't last long.

The prose was stunning, the plot compelling and suspenseful, though forgettable in hindsight. I was gripped by it while I read it, but it seems like a twisted dream now. Still, Winston’s writing is as captivating as always so it’s more of a 3.75 star. Would recommend - the length makes it completely digestible and easy to flip through page after page.
