I read this. I don’t really have anything to say about it, it was okay.

I blame my school for this.

The three components of this book:
- misogyny
- Hitler's "perfect race" mindset
- insensitivity

I don't think I've ever read anything so suspenseful! The writing in this short story was so incredibly evocative, and despite being so short, I feel like we get to know our two leads quite well! Zaroff, despite seeming like a madman, is charming and thoroughly likable, and Rainsford is so clever and collected, which makes total sense for a character of his background! The imagery is the best part of this book, though. I've never felt so like I was in the story before rather than just observing! The writing is so absorbing!

I remember reading this in 6th grade and loved it and seeing it on here brought back those memories of it. Love it!

“Great sport, hunting."
"The best sport in the world," agreed Rainsford.
"For the hunter," amended Whitney. "Not for the jaguar."
"Don't talk rot, Whitney," said Rainsford. "You're a big-game hunter, not a philosopher. Who cares how a jaguar feels?"
"Perhaps the jaguar does," observed Whitney.
"Bah! They've no understanding."
"Even so, I rather think they understand one thing--fear. The fear of pain and the fear of death."
"Nonsense," laughed Rainsford. "This hot weather is making you soft, Whitney. Be a realist. The world is made up of two classes--the hunters and the huntees. Luckily, you and I are hunters.”
