I laughed, I cried, I wanted to kick a pig. Lonesome Dove is the story of friendship set against the backdrop of the Wild West at a time when the west was losing its wild. The characters are what makes this cattle drive epic worth reading.

Lonesome Dove is excellent. It’s a bit of a project to get through it but it reads well and is a great tale.

5.0: Is this the great American Tragedy? Rare are novels like this.

A story set in a unique—and frankly brief, period of American history that still, to this day, holds a powerful grip on the American identity. It’s full of larger-than-life characters who feel more like figures from childhood folk tales than people from everyday reality.

I took my time reading this book and really sat with the characters, which made their journey feel all the more meaningful. The prose isn’t complex, and the story is even more simplified, but the impact on the reader is undeniable. The pain, the joy, the laughter, and, more importantly, the grief you experience alongside the characters is second to none.

I’ve read some truly wonderful novels this year, but this easily ranks in my top five of all time.
