After getting through the first 200 pages, I felt like I really understood the characters. I loved Gus the most, but also adored Newt, and the book often felt like a coming-of-age story for him. The female characters made me grateful I didn’t live during that time period, though I appreciated both Clara and young Janie. My favorite part of the book was the way the different storylines wove together. I loved the rhythm of characters coming and going and how their paths overlapped. The prose and character development were truly incredible. As I read the last page, I knew that this classic is one of my all time favorites.

This book is a masterpiece. One of the greatest fiction novels ever. McMurtry is a masterful writer and the best with character I’ve ever read. So good, this book is #1 on my all time list. Period.
