While I really wanted to love this short story given the subject matter, I just didn’t. I read for joy and this was far too hard hitting to enjoy it.

This was short and maybe not so-sweet, but rather satisfying in how as Galatea
returns to her purest form, she takes with her the very man who refused to consider her anything more than his plaything. She found more agency in stone, than in life.
How absolutely devastating.

I wish there were more of her story. I wish we knew what happened to Paphos. She was only ten and I fear for what she would have had to face alone.

An interesting take on the Pygmalion myth, certainly one that I think a lot of women have mulled over before. It was short and to the point, well written but not all that groundbreaking, I think.

This is my first Madeline Miller book and I did enjoy it. I am excited to read Song of Achilles now that I know I like her writing.

I enjoyed reading the afterword included which talks about how Galatea came to be and the original myth it came from.

Madeline Miller reimagines Greek Mythologies with such beautiful imagery. I could feel the frustration and entrapment Galatea feels as her husband traps her in the tiny room with surveillance in the form a nurse and doctor. The lengths a mother, even those who were formerly a stone statue, to save her child and the "children" who are and will be affected by her husband never ceases to prevail.

Ideally, Galatea would
not have died at the end
, but I'll take what I have hahah

Honestly, Miller is at her best when she doesn’t have time to meander. Her prose has gotten better since this, yes, but I prefer the tighter story.
