This might be my least favorite LMM book. I found it kind of boring and trite.

Lovely and dear. It reminded me thematically of my beloved [b:The Blue Castle|95693|The Blue Castle|L.M. Montgomery|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1442108651l/95693._SY75_.jpg|1298683], only with a child heroine instead of an adult one. I enjoyed it a lot. And after spending the weekend reading L.M. Montgomery, it's starting to feel like a tragedy that I don't live on Prince Edward Island! Nobody could've loved that place as much as she did.

“Life, deal gently with her…love, never desert her.”
I always go back to LM Montgomery because of the familiarity and nostalgia. I am just disappointed by how underrated Jane of Lantern Hill is, when in my opinion, it's one of LM Montgomery's stronger novels. Compared to her earlier novels, Jane of Lantern Hill is less episodic and actually has a central conflict. The blueprint in Maud's other works starts with introducing a lonely child-girl, who is then taken to the magical world of Prince Edward Island and life simply just happens thereafter, with little vignettes of run-of-the-mill rural life activities; but with Jane of Lantern Hill, the story just felt like it naturally unfolds before its readers.
Though not as boisterous as Anne or as spunky as Emily or as rebellious as Valancy, Jane simply wanted to be happy. She wanted to experience life both in its simplest and fullest. She reminds me of the opening scene of the Ghibli film, From Up on a Poppy Hill. Jane just wants to tend to her garden, clean the house, do chores, spend time with dad, and make heavenly meals. She does not have the annoying knack for using big words, she's not as imaginative, romantic, or creative as the other heroines but she is just as much inspiring. Jane just wants to live life the way a Ghibli character would.

One of those sweet stories with an expected ending. You know all along how it's going to go, but it's a gentle and pleasant journey.
