Why do you take all the life out of life? Why do you kill all the beauty?
Like falling off the edges of the world. There suddenly being an edge.
But that hatred in that dream. It was so real. I don't know how to exorcise it.
And the sky all wild, all free, all wind and air and space and stars.
Knowing what it was to be in a universe.
The power of women! I've never felt so full of mysterious power. Men are a joke.

This was so unsettling to read, but nonetheless Fowles's writing is genius as always and manages to delve deep into the character's minds.

I read the blah description of this book on Goodreads after finishing the book. It doesn't represent the book well at all. So if you're questioning reading it because of that, just go ahead and read it.
I was really drawn in by this and read it in one sitting. The psychopath as narrator is so interesting and honest, and I love that we can see where he's going even before he does. There is so much depth and tension that I just had to keep reading.
It was a good idea to throw in the captive's diary, but it flopped. It is printed after the psychopath's narration is nearly complete and covers the same timeline and many of the same events. Maybe if it had been somehow intertwined it would've worked better. All it really adds is Miranda's annoying musings about her life pre-abduction. She is so elitist and has such a superiority complex that it becomes harder to feel for her.
Give this a read during the day with the blinds open and the front door locked. It's not creepy in a trashy Saw kind of way, but it's haunting on a psychological, "who is really around you" type way and I'm pretty sure it will stick with me for awhile.

I had to read this book for school and I thought it was one of the better ones that I was forced to read. I probably would have enjoyed it more if I could have read it on my own, but oh well. I like strange stories like this one; stories that make you feel weird and uncomfortable but leave you oddly satisfied. I'm not too sure why, though. But this one kept me captivated by a person's motives for what they decide to do with their lives. The thought process behind something as horrible as what happens to the girl. It has been a while since I actually read it, so characters' names are not coming to my mind at the moment. All I really remember was feeling weird and captivated at the same time. The closest thing I can compare it to is when you follow a murder story or a conspiracy theory. The story itself may be terrible, but yet, you can't seem to stop finding out more about it. You just have to know all about the killer and the victim and the reasons behind the crime.
