An unnerving read as you dive into the mind of the disturbed and corrupted.
the way he couldn't even see that his actions were bad because "other men would do worse things" was horrifying
4.5/5 stars
This book was absolutely disturbing and thrilling! The tension just seemed to build and build!
An amazing look inside the mind of a seriously deranged and misguided man, The Collector is a wonderful book about one person's attempt to find meaning in the emptiness of his existence and another's desire to survive and stay true to her ideals.
With detailed descriptions of psychosis and madness, Fowles takes the reader into dark places and drippy cellars where evil lurks. And the evil in this story seems all the more sinister and upsetting because the main character is so blind to it. He believes he is just and heartfelt and doesn't understand the emotional responses of his captive "guest". A true psychopath/sociopath.
The writing is also truly great and I loved the fact that the narrative shifted halfway through, giving new insights and perspective to the situation and characters.
The reason this book didn't get the full five stars, was because I feel like it's a novel very much of its own time. References, politics, and ideals, felt very much like they belonged in the 1960s when this novel was written. It didn't seem to stand up very well, but I don't blame the author for taking an interest in the Zeitgeist of his own day. It just seems sort of out of place for me, in this book.
