Slow at times, but the last 1/3 of the book was worth the wait and the slog that came before it. Excited for the final 3 books.
Wow what a massive improvement over the last 3 books. I feel like my lowered expectations have possibly made me more likely to enjoy almost any improvement but I can't help but believe this whole book was an apology to his fans. I'm giving this a 3.5 but settling on 3 just to be punitive to the previous set of triple mediocrity.
Tuon and Mat were fantastic, Rand/Lews was interesting and met some real challenges, the ladies had some good moments (especially Nineave's subtle moves in the borderlands). Basically everything you want from a WoT book.
I really think Elayne is bloody awful though. Every moment with her is the worst part of this book. Jordan doesn't do palace intrigue very well and Elayne is too selfish and stupid to be interesting even though RJ thinks he's writing a strong willed character.
The lesser but still disappointing arc for Perrin had some good moments for both him and Faile but it was overall underwhelming for a 3 book setup.
Still, the story is back to being worth reading so I can't complain too much.

Finally, something starts happening! 3 books to go...
Okay, I think I’ve hit the upswing. I enjoyed the maneuvering, battles, and balanced distribution of POV narration. We’ve finally started to see some of Rand’s mission to unite the people of the world and bring main characters back together. I’m excited for the next book and looming Tarmon Gai’don!
It took a few chapters, but this is the WoT book I've enjoyed most (so far). I am a sentimental person, and was moved by many of the storylines in this book. Only about 60 or so hours left to read
This book is an absolute revelation. Jordan DID still know those characters and how to write them, as well as how to write exciting and engaging plots. It was so fresh and felt like reading one of the early books again. It's only problems are that it is still plagued by some of the shortcomings in the slog, most notably an excessive amount of side characters and b plots that are almost impossible to keep track of and rarely interesting.
A great return to form, and Sanderson is next.
