While reading historical fiction books, especially WWII, we usually see from the Allies' perspective. Some courageous authors decided to write fictional plots based on true stories, to write about people that were living in Germany, working for the NAZI party, but at the same time fighting against them.
I read The Girl from Guernica mainly across a copy of Picasso's painting of Guernica in our living room. As I am a quarter Spanish (my maternal grandmother) and Jewish, books like this one are essential as it is heartbreaking. Stories like this are important because there were people and even high ranks of the NAZI party that didn't go hand in hand with the atrocities and tried to do something with high consequences for them and their families.
The Spanish civil war, unfortunately, is on the back burner for non-Spanish authors. It was a civil war with a lot of bloodshed. Guernica is a famous battle, primarily because of Picasso's painting. Bringing a vengeance story to fight the NAZI party is an exciting plot. For a long time, a book like The Girl from Guernica made me a monogamous reader.
The Girl from Guernica is a book that made me cry, laugh, and be mad. In a thought-provoking novel, how strong is Sibil? Seventeen years old girls see her mother and sister die from firing airplanes that her father helped build. As readers, we must understand that Sibi plays a double role, from one side to vengeance for her mother and sister's murder. On the other hand, she becomes the face of the NAZI propaganda against the Guernica accusation, and at the same time, she finds a way to pass important information to the Allies. Yes, a small part of romance is nice, but it doesn't interfere with the main story.
Sibi, Jo & Margarit have a strong bond, especially after the Guernica incident. Sibi understands that becoming a spy is putting her family in danger. Through the story, she comprehends that her sisters are vulnerable and that the NAZI party can take them to places where she might never see them again.

Sibi is a 16 year girl living in Guernica, Spain in April of 1937. She lives with her three sister and mother in the city on the brink of WWII. When the city is attacked by the Germans, her life is never the same. An American military man by the name of Griff saves Sibi after the attack and quickly becomes a friend to her. As she moved to Berlin, she’s coerced to lie by the Germans about what she saw that fateful day in exchange for protection of her and her family’s sake. As the war starts, Sibi joins the underground resistance, secretly exchanging information with Griff. As she goes deeper undercover, she has to find a way to stay two steps ahead of her enemies to stay alive. The story is fast pace and there were times that there was a knot in my stomach and I feared for Sibi and her family’s sake. I loved this book and it will be in my top ten books of the year. Karen Robards is a great storyteller and this is a unique story of WWII as it takes place between Spain and Berlin during the height of WWII. Sibi is my new hero and I was rooting for her the entire time during the story.

It’s been a long time since I’ve read a book that had me turning pages late into the night and thinking about getting back to reading whenever I was doing anything else. The characters were strong and lovable with beautiful relationships, and the plotting was smart and fast-paced. The writing was perfect for the book in the sense that it was good, but not flowery, allowing it to fade into the background and let the story shine without taking you out of it to reflect on beautiful language or the skill of the writer. I really enjoyed the touch of romance and the way that the characters’ fictional lives were used to weave together so many real events of WWII. A fantastic read from start to finish. I borrowed it from the library, but  I’ll be buying a copy to add to my own bookshelves.
