I honestly was a bit disappointed by 75% of the cases in this part of the series, I felt the others held my interest a bit more. But those that held my interest, REALLY held my interest. Finally got to see the infamous Sherlock Cliff scene too!

"The Diogenes club is the queerest club in London, and Microft one of the queerest men."
I'm a bit too immature for these older books because this statement just made me go yaaaas

Any attempt at recovering the bodies was absolutely hopeless, and there, deep down in that dreadful caldron of swirling water and seething foam, will lie for all time the most dangerous criminal and the foremost champion of the law of their generation.

I cannot imagine living in 1800s and reading this case for the very first time going: EXCUSE ME??? YOU CANT JUST
KILL OFF SHERLOCK HOLMES
. Insane.

I find Sherlock's memoirs less memorable than his adventures, probably because a lot of these stories are less fantastical than the ones found in [b:The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes|3590|The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (Sherlock Holmes, #3)|Arthur Conan Doyle|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1164045516l/3590._SY75_.jpg|1222101]. Both collections inspired the detective genre so much that the answers to the majority their mysteries end up being predictable if you're a mystery lover. I don't mind that since they're still well told and I also find solvability to be indicative of a solid mystery. I'm just saying that this collection doesn't stick in my mind the way stories like A Scandal in Bohemia and The Blue Carbuncle do.

I like to mention whenever older novels contain elements that will shock modern readers, so I'll end by saying that short story The Yellow Face is pretty horrifically racist and also not that good, so it's up to you if you want to skip it. If you don't skip it, just be prepared to have a glaring reminder of how much society has changed in the last 120+ years.
