i felt it started incredibly well, the first 75% of the book was well thought out and moving. however i felt it became a bit unsure towards the end but ultimately it was a beautiful piece of literature and was incredibly inspiring to a young gay guy, that we have come so far and yet we still feel the same

Maurice was my first novel by Forster. I do not recall how I initially came across but it was on my to-be-read (TBR) list for a while. When the Book Cougars (https://www.bookcougars.com) chose it as a group read, I was happy to join their discussion. I gave it a high rating for the writing and its timeless appeal.

Maurice is about young love between two young men in the early 1900s. Given the timeframe, such a relationship was controversial. Clive Durham represented a composite of realistic responses to homosexuality. He managed to evoke an emotional response from me. Clive's attitude is still present in our society and it infuriates me.

I tried to empathize with Maurice, the title character. During a discussion with his sister, Maurice did upset me with his retort, “Nurses are not nice. No nice girl would be a nurse. If they are you may be sure they do not come from nice homes, or they would stop at home". I had to calm myself with the reminder that nursing has come a long way.

My own experience is an example of the change in nursing. My heartfelt thanks to my instructors in nursing school for setting a positive tone. They stressed treating every patient as human regardless of age, religion, criminal background or sexual preference. Advice worth sharing in every profession.

Absolutely took my breath away at times. Beautiful. Perfect combination of a coming of age, coming to know oneself, and romance story. It all felt so brave and so real.

this book took a long time for me to read, but i think its just because i really wanted to absorb everything it had to say. recently i’ve really been skimming books but tuned in attentively to everything in this one because i found it all pretty interesting. maurice wasn’t my favorite mc, he was kinda mean sometimes, but i think that’s just part of his charm lol. i also hated clive. like a lot. was kind of indifferent on alec?? he was there for like 50 pages and did blackmail maurice, but he’s nice!! i think the story behind this books publishing is what made me so interested in it, but the story i got out of it did not disappoint!!

This book was good; my first romance novel. i think i was embarrassed reading it because its romance but i kind of mixed it up with being embarrassed reading it cuz its gay. no hate to gay people just some internalized stuff i gots to figure out. but anyway. i thought it was a real shame that maurice and clive never got together,, or at least that they never talked their shit out. i didn't really understand why or how clive was able to just suddenly stop being gay; was he bisexual or just repressing himself completely? i understand that he fell out of love with maurice but to stop being interested in men entirely? and the way forster wrote it made his sudden interest in women sound genuine and true and magical, of sorts. real happy for maurice that he confronted clive in the end, that he got to have the final word and say all the shit he needed to. maurice reminded me a lot of a certain someone, but he and all the other characters were also misogynistic pos so not really.
