A bold and emotive queer narrative from Forster. What happens when love is forbidden? How do we deal with that? Since reading 'The New Life', I've had a desire to read more queer period fiction and this was definitely the vibe I wanted. Yeah, Clive's a knob for how he treats Maurice but you strangely also completely understand his predicament; these are two men who love each other deeply placed in a completely impossible situation, which creates literary gold dust for Forster. Also, I thought a lot about how Alec's lower social class and his homosexuality are intertwining factors in making him something of an outcast.

I takes a certain kind of arrogance to complain this much and be so unsufferable (Coming from a person who LOVES to complain).
All in all I appreciate the story and I think the authors note also put it into perspective (and was the thing that I enjoyed most to read in the book because it just felt more real) but this is a book I should've read 5 years ago.
Now I was just annoyed by the misogyny and was too focused on the flaws of the characters to appreciate the impact of the novel.

Truly one of the most emotion-inducing books I have read. I feel so deeply the feelings of (especially) Maurice, these feelings in question and the characters are so well and realistically written, there is so much depth and beautiful syntax which only fuels the sentiment, I can't stop reading. I feel as if the events are happening to me personally even though in reality I am far from the actual story. Also, the relationship with the writer (which, together with extra info about the evolution of the characters, is clarified in the Terminal Note by Forster himself, something I really appreciate) gives so much extra depth to the story. Deeply touching.
