"Did you ever dream you'd a friend, Alec? Nothing else but just 'my friend', he trying to help you and you him. A friend," he repeated, sentimental suddenly. "Someone to last your whole life and you his. I suppose such a thing can't really happen outside sleep."

i feel like the "terminal notes" at the end of the book really helped me to understand and reflect on it better.
(additionally, the unexpectedness relateness of position of queer people in britain in 1960s? i've read the words
"And I, though less optimistic, had supposed that knowledge would bring understanding. We had not realized that what the public really loathes in homosexuality is not the thing itself but having to think about it. If it could be slipped into our midst unnoticed, or legalized overnight by a decree in small print, there would be few protests. Unfortunately it can only be legalized by Parliament, and Members of Parliament are obliged to think or to appear to think.Consequently the Wolfenden recommendations will be indefinitely rejected, police prosecutions will continue and Clive on the bench will continue to sentence Alec in the dock. Maurice may get off.”
and i didn't expect that they would hit me so much. ouch.)

i can't say that i loved this book, but its message? the afterword? reading it was worth it for me

Read this book about six months back and dwelled on it for a bit. Not in a good way. I have to give the narrative credit for it's daring nature in the face of historic challenges, and I also have to take into account the proclivities of the time period. For what it is, I am glad that it
has a happy ending of sorts.
But to say I enjoyed it would be a lie.
