A story of its time in the early 20th century, the lives having to be hidden to fit with the norms and laws. The shames felt and the lives changed to fit. Thank goodness for progressivism.

Forster's book was part of one of my classes during my semester abroad at DCU. It started out as a tough read, simply because it's not what I usually read or what I'm used to regarding genre, style of writing etc.
But the more I engaged with the story and secondary literature about Forster and this book, the more I enjoyed reading Maurice and even ended up writing a term paper about it.

2.5 stars. It's hard to review this novel. I recognize how ahead of its time it was, and it makes me so sad to think of the many, many people who have felt "wrong" and wanted desperately to be "normal" like Maurice did. I appreciate the story, but the telling was awkward... there were several large jumps in the story that made me go back, assuming I'd missed something, and narrator changes in strange places.
I loved this. I really did. It’s not five stars because I just wanted a little more out of the ending, which funnily enough Forester comments on in his notes at the end. Everything about this book was heartbreakingly gentle. To a happier year indeed.
