the dedication of this book reads “to a happier year”. as a queer person, that hit me right from the get-go, and i knew this was going to stay with me.
maurice is undeniably a 20th century book. we have come far as a community and a society and the vilification of socialism / disdain for women has little place in the spaces where we dwell. however, the singular journey of an individual who finds himself feeling something he knows he will be reproached and ostracised for, and yet cannot suppress and finds he does not want to, is too easy to relate to. the experience of finding togetherness and being left behind - the feeling that others may pass as “normal” and the sinking realisation that as much as you try,
you never will - punched me in the gut. the fact that the author knew that he could never have published this in 1914 because it had a happy ending, and it stayed a manuscript because he refused to change it into a tragic one, is proof that we can have those.
