The summary of this book sounded so good. But the execution just did not work. It felt a little all over the place. The pacing was off, and I just didn’t totally understand what was happening.

Well that was a drag. I wanted SO BADLY to love this book. The synopsis hooked me immediately, the mythology absolutely stunning and fascinating to learn about and tie into the story. But the writing especially was just a mess. It was like I couldn’t keep up or things never were earned or explained. Glad I didn’t DNF, but woof.

I love reading historical fiction set different parts of the world, so I very much appreciated this book for what it taught me about mesoamerican mythology and Spanish colonization in 16th century Mexico. That being said, I felt like the characters fell kind of flat. I don’t know if it was the first person narrative or just the writing, but I never particularly connected with Lenora or any of the side characters. I’m writing this review less than a month after finishing the book and I barely even remember the ending, so it clearly didn’t leave an impression. The author did an excellent job of world building but the character development left something to be desired. If you loved Netflix’s series “Maya and the Three,” I would recommend this book for its mythological content.
