Between Long Halloween, Dark Knight Returns and Year One it's hard to find an earlier Batman book that someone doesn't like. Year One is mine. It's rich, dark and grounded. It's a street-level, nuanced and (yes, I know) gritty urban take. Infinitely influential, hardboiled and noirish and with sumptuous black-lined art that strikes the fine line between cartoony and human.

I mean the absolute just ramps the art up to 1000. And having the script and a reproduction of what it may have originally released like is very much appreciated. I appreciated this book in absolute more than I ever have before. As with films, I am convinced that quality, surroundings and circumstance and possibly also context, contribute to the enjoyment of all media.

Great, realistic depiction of the origins of Batman and his professional relationship with Jim Gordon.

It was okay but the heavy noir, hard boiled style got in the way of getting to really know any of the characters besides maybe Lt. Gordon. There were no villains really, Selina Kyle was introduced but her plot was thin and not fleshed out in any real way.
