Not too many years ago, I was addicted to my Kindle. I subscribed to Kindle Unlimited and started what would become an ever increasing absorption of books through the years. Though, as I learned more about our society, unfair practices, and dangerous policies and grew to be more community-minded, my reading practices changed. I read more and more physical copies and always enjoyed the sense of tangibly feeling my progress through a good book. I also started traveling more intentionally, browsing through local downtown businesses (feeling a special sort of magic in bookstores) and finding the joy in discovering unique characteristics of various towns I found myself in.
Reading this book reminds me of and reinforces all the reasons I have evolved the way I take in books and bookstores and how I would like to continue living my life. There is a purposefulness in celebrating small businesses,  in particular bookstores, since at their core they foster and in many ways fight for Community in a world that is fast turning to mega corporations as the answer to all of our supposed problems.
Please give this a read and discover so many ways that bookstores and booksellers can enrich your life, the life of your community and, given a hopeful evolution in policies and systems, the world at large.

I loved this book.

As an indie bookseller, I’ve found Danny’s perspective to be immensely helpful when thinking about the industry in a much larger context.

When I read How to Resist Amazon and Why I couldn’t wait to pick this one up and continue my personal exploration into the world of bookselling and the issues surrounding it.

Having the perspective of not only Danny, but so many others who have gone through some of the worst challenges when the only thing they want to keep a constant is access to books and the freedom of reading, was incredibly powerful and at the same time frustrating, and here’s why:

I loved that he included the chapter on Shakespeare & Company in Paris, France. It provided the much needed context of how booksellers around the world are treated and how America truly needs to step up its game in protecting something that so many hold dear — not just for independent bookstores, but small businesses overall.

I cannot wait to handsell the crap out of this one alongside How to Resist Amazon and Why. Also, I can’t wait for the third installment in 2026!

Also also, shoutout to Microcosm — you guys are paving the way for publishing in this country and it is something that is truly refreshing. Thank you for all that you do!

Important for people to understand how important it is to support independent bookstores and to avoid Amazon.
