this book is deserving of it's 4star goodreads rating!
i am notorious for not having any interest in mysteries but, i genuinely enjoyed this. i wouldn't have ever picked up this book for myself but, my library system was having a book club with this book so of course i wanted to be involved.
i really enjoyed this, more than i thought i would. there are some qualms i have with it but, i was engaged the entire time and was actively interested in the story (especially at the end).
as soon as this finished, i was like ... well what happens next? i NEED the next book lmao. i'm a lil invested in these characters now and need to find out what happens with this murder and if [redacted] truly is responsible :O

A decent YA mystery is hard to find. Not great, though I think that was the narrator of the audiobook that may have edged my enjoyment a bit.
Loved the representation of anxiety. It is nice to know you are not alone. If this had been published like 15 years ago it would have a solid chance and being a favorite book ever.
The cliffhanger though....

love love loved this book! i love a good boarding school fiction and felt the mystery of this was done really well, it didn’t feel like a teenager playing ‘sleuth’. great writing, great plot, can’t wait to read the rest of the series — i hope they live up to the standard of this book!
This is my second read this 2019 and it was a good way to start reading full length novels again.
A mystery book always fascinates me and this one was no exception but there are some stuffs in this book that got me cringe to the highest level.
So let’s talk about the characters first, we have our protagonist who is a real crime aficionado Stevie. I did like her at first but what really bugs me about her is when she suddenly gets lustful towards his roommate slash love interest David (which she doesn’t know anything about him). Then we have David the ragged love interest that didn’t appeal much to me, I just can’t connect with him. Then also have some side characters like Janelle, Ellie and Nate that fits really well in the story.
As for the plot we have two timelines, from 1930s to present. I really love the mystery that was going on with the 1930s time but I’m not really amaze when the culprit was finally revealed and I’m not sure if they’re really the culprit or that maybe something more is going on with Ellingham case. Then we have the present time which also involved in a cold murder case and still not convince when the culprit was reveal since it wasn’t sure if this person was the real culprit so I guess I need to read the sequel. It was a fast pace read and that’s what I really love about this book. It was also an easy read, the writing style was good and you will really get hook with it.
All in all, I have mixed feelings about this book, I wasn’t really that convince when the culprit to both cases were finally revealed. Also I’m not a fan of the insta-love that was going on between Stevie and David. Also I really want more character development from other characters like Nate, Janelle and Ellie. It was a good read but not so great like what my friends on bookstagram told me about it.

girl what?!?!
Okay so I did enjoy this but I was expecting more. The ending didn’t feel very wrapped up because the actual murder we are following never truly got solved and the ending just make another conflict/situation. I am really interested in starting the next book to see where this story goes!
I went into this book thinking that the series is multiple different murders but from the ending I’m assuming we are still trying to figure out this case? Maybe?
So this definitely can’t be read as a standalone!
Overall, I did enjoy this and am excited to get into the next one but just a bit let down by the ending but also shocked at the same time!!

This book is super fun and I really enjoyed it. It is set in two timelines: 1936, when the tycoon Albert Ellingham's wife and daughter are kidnapped and later one is found murdered; and present day, with the admission of student Stevie Bell to Ellingham Academy; Stevie, who is determined to solve the cold case. The setting is great, an old estate with sprawling grounds and a beautiful mansion turned boarding school. There are quirky characters from all different backgrounds and interests. An old mystery that slowly unfolds every few chapters, as a new mystery builds in the opposing timeline. Not everyone is who they say they are, and that can be good and bad. The characters are well developed, the mysteries are fun puzzles, and the book doesn't end! It is to be continued to the second in the series which I am starting now....
