I picked this book up after reading Maureen Johnson's tiny clever tiny book "Your Guide to Not Getting Murdered in a Quaint English Village." This is equally clever, set in a private high school for genius juniors and seniors in northern Vermont. Stevie, the heroine, wants to solve the 1936 kidnapping and possible murders of the founder's wife and daughter along with the death of a student at the school. Her housemates are into writing, art, philosophy, drama, and making things. Like most genius teens, there is brilliance, angst, hormones, mistakes, blind spots, intensity . . . After making a video about a former tunnel on the property where the 1936 student's body was found, a current-day student has an accident with dry ice (which contains poisonous chemicals) or was it murder? Like many other young adult series, this book ends on a cliff hanger, so on to part two of three.
I want to give this book more like 2,5 stars considering how utterly frustrated I was that the ending was just a cliff hanger for the second book. Overall liked the writing style and the little hints to other detective stories though I found the flashbacks to be a bit boring. I wish the first book‘s plot was more tied together in the end.

I really enjoyed this book! Definitely looking forward to the next one, though I didn't know going in that it wasn't a standalone.
Devoured this in a few days, I love love loved it!!! The writing style sucks you in, leaves you thinking about the book when you aren't reading it. I gotta get the next one!
