This was my first "Marple" read, and I really enjoyed it! Can't wait to continue on with her series.

The first Miss Marple. I was surprised that Miss Marple was really just a supporting player in this book since the first person narration was by the vicar. I listened to the audio which was read ably by James Saxon.

I really like how Christie writes; it's so typically british, and her usage of words is also such.

Spoiler What I really enjoyed was the underlying constant lil jab of Mary being a bad housemaid, and that's why they wanted to keep her. It was funny little moments sprinkled between the scenes.

Another thing I really enjoyed too, and that is more of a narrative thing, was that the main character is unbelievably passive. Truly, he doesn't really act from his own as much, there had been only a few instances where we witness a lot of his train of thought that makes him act. Usually, the entire time it's other people seeking him out, and through the dialogue that they have, we watch the matters unfold.

A very peculiar way to write things, and usually bland and uninteresting characters like that don't interest me, but the very thing that I dislike in other characters, I found it to be a rather natural charm. I think because it's less that Leonard Clemens doesn't have a personality, but that he is just very reluctant to show it. Even to us, readers.

Anyway, an enjoyable book. The reason why it's not a 5/5 is because, it felt slow to read, and the ending came abruptly, tbh.
On another note -- I had to look up many words, but that was a good challenge. I learned a lot, too!

The first Miss Marple mystery.

I've read 38 of Dame Agatha's 80 books, and I've still never figured out the killer before the reveal.

Love Miss Marple!

Colonel Protheroe gets murdered in the Vicarage study, in a town where all the comings and goings seem to be noticed by absolutely everyone, and yet it seems the murderer has gotten away with the crime. Though no one is quite above suspicion, almost everyone has an alibi, and no evidence has been left behind to tie anyone to the crime. That's before Miss Marple's extraordinary skills of deduction come into play though.

This was my first Agatha Christie novel. I'd obviously heard of her and have wanted to read a novel written by her for years but this was my first foray into that. After reading Murder at the Vicarage, I understand why Agatha Christie's novels reached such popularity. The host of characters was pretty well developed, there were clues but also enough confusion to keep the reader from guessing outright whodunnit. One thing in particular that I enjoyed was the sense of humor that the Vicar (and Agatha Christie) had. I laughed out loud on multiple occasions. The only thing that made this book a slightly more difficult read for me was the language - it was difficult in some places to understand, or when I would pick the book up again, simply because language has changed in the almost 100 years since this book has been written. 4/5 stars.
