So, on one hand I enjoyed getting to 'see' the characters again. On the other hand, it turned out to be so disappointing and it breaks my heart to say that, I love this series so very much. I didn't feel like it answered any questions, if anything it just created more. I feels as though this book was set up to "get us ready" for the next one and I don't know that I can get excited about another 7 years wait. The ending was...so wrong and abrupt. A cliffhanger ending after waiting as long as we did is just not in good form. There is a part of me that wonders if this book wasn't entirely written to give the TV series more to go on. I hope that I am wrong.

BIG kudos to Davina Porter. Once again, she did a fabulous job. 5 stars to her.

I listened to this on audible. I sat through 40 plus hours waiting (and hoping) for something to happen. After the first quarter, I felt deflated but still hoped. There was too much come in and have a cup of tea and let me tell you all about the room, the cookie, the tea leaves, all these things I would have simply skipped over which, if reading, would have cut the book in half. My expectations of a wonderful story were drowned by the lack of something happening, too many conveniences, to many references to action after it happened which, if was actually written about, would have made the book far more tolerable. For example, Jamie runs into the woods with a whole army after him, then he shows up at the house and everything that happened in between is a two minute conversation between him and Claire instead of letting us live through the scene. Kidnappings happen and we know nothing about them until the character simply shows up in chains. She writes beautiful sentences but for the most part, they are disconnected and lead nowhere or are insignificant to what I'd actually like to be reading about. If you cut out the over-description (i.e. describing what was for supper, then describing it on a plate in three pages or more) and cut out the chapters that you are thinking what the hell does that have to do with anything, how is it connected, or how is it bringing the story forward, the book might be a novella. Why am I reading about painting a dead guy when another has just gone through a trauma and we know nothing about it. I get the feeling the author simply slapped words on the page, like she relied on her reputation to sell the book rather than a good plot or several which would leave you watering for the next one.
It was a disappointment. The book was boring and wasted a lot of my time. I do love the series on TV, but the build up to this book much outshined the reward.

I can’t explain the euphoria I felt to pick this book up on the day it was FINALLY published. I’ve been watching the publication date for years. I was not too invested in the plot, as much as I was just so excited to get to spend time with my friends. I have so missed them all!

This book really honors all of our favorite characters from Outlander. Even ones that have previously died are at least mentioned and honored which warmed my heart. Also villains of previous books are mentioned too- which I think really honors the series.

I also continue to enjoy the references to time: toilets, plastic (yuck), Dr. Seuss, Merck Manual, PB&J

I really tried to savor and enjoy the read but halfway through the book there was great foreshadowing of the end… and it became harder to enjoy when my
Stomach was in knots. I do feel a sadness tho as I completed the book and will have to live in anticipation for the next one.

There are few books who make me feel like I'm at home while reading it so much as the Outlander books do. I missed new stories from the Ridge over the past few years, and even though not a lot happened in the first part of the book, settling back in there, with Jamie, Claire and the other inhabitants really felt like coming home, and I absolutely loved that. Add to that a bit more action (and some nail biting scenes) when the war for the American Independence really starts (and Jamie (and Roger) finding their place in it), and it means I absolutely loved this book.

Story has gotten very big a sprawling- still love all the characters and eager to know what next. Back to waiting for the next installment

Throughout the first 2/3rds of this book I kept thinking this is the most boring book ever written by this usually wonderful author. It finally becomes more interesting and the last 200 pages save it. But still … it’s mostly meandering trips down memory lane with the characters musing on things past, I suppose meant to remind the reader of story lines from previous books. It seemed like Diana had enough material for a 300 page book but the fans require this series to run to 900 (at least!) so it was stretched with filler - way too much filler - and new characters, whose story lines often seemed to be exploratory for later books. Mostly, this whole book feels like a set up for the next, and final, of the series. I am hopeful that the wait won’t be as long as Gabaldon has said that she has known for 20 years how it will end. And the (very predictable) cliffhanger here should make for a very easy transition to continue on. I couldn’t not read this one, although I often felt like not finishing it. I’m happy to have stuck it out and am hoping for a much better finish to the series.

No spoilers here. What a ride. Just as good as all the previous books. Looking forward to the next one.
