4.2 AVERAGE

This one was really boring. Definitely skippable. Hope the next one’s better.

My absolute fave outlander book yet. So incredibly well done. And the nod to a song of ice and Fire in chapter 102 was delightful

Someone else said it first. This is a 900 page love letter to the characters and slice of 1780’s life. The editing is confusing as in one part a character meets another character and then they meet later for the first time. I enjoyed being in the world but very little actually happened

When you start recycling characters and events, it’s perfectly okay to just not write them in in the first place. Like, Fanny is basically early Lizzy version 2? And Claire pulls Jamie back from the brink of death. And they build a house at the Ridge. We did all that already. The good stuff is so good, but there’s too much other stuff in between. I wonder how long till the next one, will it really be the last, and how long will it be? It is a mercy that I’ve finished the most recent one - maybe I can get my reading streak back on track.

I love the Outlander world and all of it’s characters. I love Diana Gabaldon and her writing. So I rounded up from 3 on this book; given because it was lacking the usual pace and plot that keeps me hanging on. I certainly enjoyed just hanging out with the Frasers again. But there wasn’t much going on. Maybe 100 pages of plot out of 900. As much as it saddens me to think about it, maybe their story is done? I’m immensely grateful for Diana’s work and don’t fault her at all. It must be so challenging to write so much. Much love!

Long but fascinating. Prob not my favorite in the Outlander series though.

The growing issue of disjointed plotting and continuity holes that has dogged this series since book 4 is at its worst here. So much padding, so little story progress.
I’m intrigued that the author included a note about writing about other cultures as a caveat to her treatment of Native Americans, but feels no need to acknowledge her similar lack of insight into African American, Scottish, or queer identity? The authorial arrogance is felt throughout this novel, in word choices, in self indulgent passages of description that add nothing to character or story. The rush from ‘finished’ manuscript to published novel is all too apparent.
End of the day, I will read the final book if and when she writes it, but the effort: reward ratio has tipped too heavily towards effort for enjoyment.

Meh.

The first half of the book had very little new information and little plot. The second 1/2 of the book moved quickly and had plot and action.

These books are my heart. That is all.

I hope the next book is released before I'm the same age as Jamie and Claire. I'm catching up faster than I'd like, LOL.
