Let me first start off by saying this book took me a hot minute to finish. It was great because for me this series is like a warm bath, I just want to sink in and stay there for a really long time. But sometimes it was hard to read because I just felt like it was too long. This is partly my fault because I didn't finish it quick it enough, but there were some parts where it just didn't flow. Despite the slowness in parts I give this book a five because it is an outstanding book and I Iove the characters.

Barely anything happens. It ends on a cliffhanger. As per usual, a lot of set up for the next book. There isn’t a lot of character development. It’s just….meditations on daily life in the late 1700s, which is interesting but for 900 pages I need a more developed plot rather than a whole bunch of barely related storylines- some of which I don’t know at all why they even exist. I have been reading pretty much only this series since August, books 2-9 and I am so very relieved that I’m done.

This book could have been a peaceful end- cover a longer period of time with less unnecessary fluff, end with peace in the colonies and peace on Fraser’s Ridge after the war. No need to drag it out until the character’s dying days. Jamie and Claire are old. We all know they’re old. They’re going to die. Why do we need a tenth book to get to that point?

It seems like she’s setting it up for another spin off series about William.

3.5

Wow! This book is huge and took me forever to finish. I'm going to need a bit more time to digest, but my initial reaction is to give this book 4 stars. I adore the characters and will always love the series, of course, but the plot of BEES felt really scattered as I was reading it.

As I said, I may just need to give myself a little time to think about it some more, but somehow, I don't feel like the plot really flowed the way I'd expected, and I'm not crazy about the plotline left dangling.

Still, it's always wonderful to spend time with Jamie and Claire and their huge extended family!

i read the complete series (so far) this year. while a lot of the storylines were finally wrapped up, quite a few are still wide open. these books are so big and long so i’m always surprised when storylines carry on across 2+ books, seems a little unnecessary at times.

the pacing in this book was a little off as well. while some chapters where not much is happening carried  on for ever, others seemed rushed. i got the impression that diana might be getting a little tired of writing about epic battles and drawn out dramatics, so there was a lot of build up and then the events themselves fizzled out quickly.

i want more about fergus’ story, the blue light and general supernatural themes in the series. they’ve been sprinkled in over the last 3 books, but i want a deep dive!!

obviously it’s an incredible series and i’m still in love with it, but this may have been one of my least favourites.

Meandering at times as any good Scottish storyline would be. Thanks to Diana for continuing to immerse us in Jaime and Claire’s love story ❤️‍
