I STRENUOUSLY disliked this novel. I wouldn't say hate because I didn't invest that much time in it. By the end, it was a hate read that I had to get through. I have enjoyed the first two novels in this series, but this thing... It started out with all the same elements as the other novels. I wasn't blown away, but I was hanging in there - and then it turned into a bad X-Files episode. Don't get me wrong, I was an X-Phile back in the day. This is like an X-Files plot someone wrote on a Post-It note. Think of the worst sci-fi aliens crash landed on Earth movies with the obsequious military cover up. Take that and put it between book covers and you have this novel.

An item of great, world-changing power. An old, once authorized organization that has gone rogue, a small group of intrepid adventurers who have to stop the bad guys and protect the powerful item against the good guys.

The plot's banal, but Preston & Child make it enjoyable. Somewhat over the top ending made it difficult to keep suspending my disbelief.

Government cover ups, Cold War espionage, archaeology, aliens, conspiracy theories…this was a tense, thriller that kept me wanting more.

This was my first book by Preston and Child, and I am looking forward to reading more books from this series.

The authors do a great job of making the setting feel very vivid. I have spent time in New Mexico and their descriptions felt spot on. Also the authors are VERY well researched. Sometimes I found myself googling technical jargon, and archaeology terms. Their writing style feels very intellectual at times, although I wouldn’t call this a difficult read, nor would I say that it is fluff or a light, beach read either. The chapters switch points of view frequently, and there are lot of characters to keep track of.

While I loved the story plot, I found myself not really forming a bond with the main protagonists, Nora and Agent Swanson. I don’t know if it’s because they felt underdeveloped as characters, or if its because I did not read the prior book in the series. I felt more empathetic toward Skip, Nora’s brother and Skip’s dog.

While there is some violence in the book, the authors didn’t go into gore al that much, with the exception of the electric fence scene.
