I'm pretty organized, so hypothetically this book wouldn't be "for me". even so, I fond myself nodding along, getting inspired and tackling some of my pain points as I rad through this fun book. i decided to pick it up after hearing Dana on The simple show, and was a bit embarrassed to find that I already owned it on kindle. oof. maybe if there's a "keep your TBR and kindle under control without losing your mind" book, I should pick that one up next!

Snagged on Kindle during a moment where my house chaos was winning. Finally owned up to the following facts: 1. I want to live in a clean organized house; 2. I hate cleaning, organizing, really all house beautification projects, 3. I prioritize most of life over cleaning and certainly over organizing, 4. a messy house makes me SUPER cranky...Result: I'm cranky a lot. Someone please label my bins and just do a gallery wall. Meanwhile, I'll keep shoving stuff in the junk drawer or piling papers in the office and shutting the door. But with the reality of 3 kids, a full-time job, and a budget that doesn't allow for someone to come in everyday and clean up after us, we have to actually live in our house and I would love to not be so cranky.
SO, I bought this book on a whim based on the title and good reviews. I can't Marie Kondo my way out of a box (NO WAY I will roll my socks more than that one time, then I will spend months feeling bad about not rolling my socks). This book is written for people like me, and makes the chaos of living in a house on a daily basis seem less daunting and less like a constant project that keeps falling apart.
Step 1: do the dishes! I already do the dishes (winning already!) so that made me feel like I could do step 2, 3 and so on. It's not a magic cure...but it provides practical advice that I can partially follow and at least make it so I am cranky a bit less often.
Favorite tidbit: decluttering tools (1) trash bag, (2) donate box, (3) your feet. Stop making piles to put away later, just put it away. Then when you are interrupted 15 minutes later and completely forget about your project, you have at least put a couple of things away instead of creating 5 new baby piles.

Now this is the kind of organization book I needed! Practical, realistic, for people like me whose brains don't operate like everyone's else's lol.

If you have to pick between this book and her second book Decluttering at the Speed of Life, you should pick this one. There is a chapter that covers her basic decluttering strategy in this book plus her strategies for keeping up with the daily tasks.

I appreciate the candor, although it definitely started to sound repetitive (more than necessary to get the point across, imo). The benefit of listening to the audiobook, my husband overheard parts so it's had some influences there as well!
My overall takeaway from this book is a reminder of Atomic Habits power, with a clean house focus. Ive figured out some of these pieces on my own, and others bits I don't fully relate to as I don't have kids, but the reminder was good, and she definitely caught me with the project mindset. Even though functionally I've shifted my efforts, the idea of adjusting the mindset also helps.

Literally life changing for messy people. I can’t recommend enough.
