5 stars on my Enid Blyton scale.
This was one of my favourite Enid Blytons as a kid and I still love it. The kids run away from abusive family (their parents have gone missing) to live in hiding by themselves on an island and the book is full of all the details of how they survive. They build a house from the branches of willow trees, catch fish and rabbits and pick berries, grow runner beans, and even get hens and a cow over to the island for milk and eggs, and huddle in a cave when the colder weather comes. I always loved the romance of staying on an island and living off the land. It's a ridiculous premise, of course, it seems unbelievable that the kids would know as much as they do (how on earth did Peggy manage to make a blanket from rabbit skins?! and swimming the cow over, could that even be done?!) But I'm perfectly happy to suspend disbelief for this one!

Another work listen, sort of just made me want to play Sims Island Living.

I loved this. So many valuable lessons and pursuit of a childhood dream. Almost docked it a star for the unnecessary gross display of wealth and entitlement at the end, clarifying the intended audience and alienating kids from most socio-economic backgrounds, but it was nevertheless a joyful and heartwarming read

I read this well before 1987, but this was the closest edition I could find. One of my all-time favorite books as a child, I read it over and over. I still remember all the plot details even though it has been a very long time since I read it.
*3.5 stars*
I just really like survivalist stories, and the long and detailed narrative of how resourceful kids manage to survive on their own in an island is just really engrossing. Little details like the rabbitskin blanket and the fruit-selling just make me want to know more.
Points off because of prose and forgettability of characters, but I can tell you I DEVOURED this book when I first read it as a pre-teen.

Hands down my favourite of Blyton’s books. I have no idea how many times I’ve read it now. It is exciting and fun every time.
My copy was my mum’s (and I think she got it second hand as is) and the sellotape on the spine was so old it dried up and fell off. We ended up having to get a second copy because Mum said it couldn’t come on holiday anymore or we’d lose pages.
My college lecturer asked what book would we bring to an desert island - the first book that came to mind. And this was mine. In the process of writing 250 words justifying my decision I ended up reading it again and it was just as exciting as I remember.
The rest of the series is okay (Spiggy Holes being very exciting too) but this stands apart. I think it’s the realistic element that isn’t in other of Blyton’s books. Reading this book - you feel that you could easily pack up the saucepan, hens and mending basket and take yourself off to an island.
